Round 1 - Sharks 12 Cougars 74 (19/05/07)
The New 2007 Wales Rugby League Premier Conference finally got underway as the Sharks welcomed the Valley Cougars to Llanelli.
The game was played in a very high spirit, with some thrilling phases of defence and offence from both sides. However, the Valley Cougars showed their game experience by running in some several fantastic tries from key areas of the pitch.
For many of the Sharks players, the game was a stepping stone, as this was their first game for the Sharks and their very first taste of Rugby League.
As the experience of the Cougars shone through, thus winning the two league points on offer, the Sharks will be disappointed with the game's result. Yet, they will not be disheartened by the performance and determination of the boys.
The Sharks now face the Bridgend Blue Bulls (Away) in Round 2 on Saturday 26th May 2007. Both sides featured in the Western Region of the Wales Premier Conference during the 2006 season and provided some thrilling encounters to say the least.
The Sharks can only move on from the Cougars game and take some of the new lessons learnt into the Bulls game next saturday.
The Sharks managed to cross the Cougars line twice with tries from Daniel Griffiths and Adam "Fit" Jones. Both tries were converted by Jonathon Griffiths.
Round 2 - Blue Bulls v Sharks (26/05/07) postponed
Round 3 - Sharks 33 Demons 32 (02/06/07)
After putting last weeks disappointment of the postponed game and the opening day crushing defeat by Valley Cougars the Sharks started this game with self belief - buoyed by the strength in depth they have managed to recruit boasting nine new players – that they could get a win against the Demons who narrowly lost last weekend. The game started brightly with no score for the first ten minutes an arm wrestle broke out with big hits put in by both side but it was the Demons who drew first blood, the game continued in the same style but the well drilled Demons widened the gap further and further taking the scores to 0-30 by the 35th minute of the game, with many fans fearing a repeat of the opening game. Not ones to give in easily the Sharks managed to grab the all so key try just before half time, which normally provides as a confidence boost to even the greatest teams. Half Time Sharks 6 Demons 30, who would have thought this was going to be a Sharks win though… Second half began and within the opening 5 minutes the Sharks went over the line from some great work the try was converted and the gap narrowed. 12-30… More hard work and graft great passing and strong running led to another try by the Sharks which was again converted 18-30…could this be a come back a glimmer of hope maybe? Straight from kick off, the Sharks took in the ball but a small bit of indiscipline led to a Demons penalty which they converted 18-32…Many thought that the penalty could be a killer blow putting the game out of reach, but the Sharks were not giving in just yet, more strong running and great team work in completing sets of six, led to another try and another before long it was 32-32…….the play was set – the fans could hardly watch on - an attack by the Sharks who then whipped the ball back to Johnny Griffiths (who seemed to hang in time) lined himself up and dropped the ball through the sticks 33-32…fantastic comeback great play by the Sharks who recorded their first win of the season …well done boys but please not so close next time!! Our thanks go to the Demons who provided the opposition today and who helped create one of the best games of Rugby League I and probably many others have witnessed in a long time, thank you and good luck for the remainder of the season.
Round 4 - Tigers 34 Sharks 30 (09/06/07)
Following a very impressive performance and win in Round 3 against the Cardiff Demons, the Sharks travelled to Pontypool to face the Torfaen Tigers. Could the Sharks make it 2 wins on the bounce??
After a lengthy bus journey up to Torfaen, the Sharks drew first blood within the first 5 minutes with Stand-Off Jonathon Griffiths scoring and converting the game's first try. 6 nil to the Sharks.
Torfaen then provided some entertaining attacking rugby football which was matched with equally as good defence from the Sharks. However, the pressure from the Tigers did eventually pay off and equalised the score to 6-6 around 10 minutes after the Sharks took the lead.
The story of the first half would be a tit-for-tat affair with Adam 'Cemo' Jones scoring the Sharks second try, only to be replied with a score from the Tigers. Another try from both sides brought the half time score to 20-18 with Sharks and Wales 'A' wing Mark Cooke adding to his tally for the season.
The Sharks' again took the lead with an under the sticks touchdown from Dave Norman which Jonny Griffiths slotted the conversion to make the score 20-24 to the away side.
Another scoring reply from the Tigers brought the score to 26-24 with around 20 minutes remaining.
There would be no change in the score for around 15 minutes as a result of some very entertaining attacking and defensive sets from both sides. With 4 minutes remaining on the clock, Mark Cooke touched down for his second try of the game which Stand-Off Jonny Griffiths converted making the score 26-30.
Could the Sharks hold on for another 4 minutes to achieve two vital points in the battle for Play-Off positions??
The answer would be no...
Fatigue had most-definately set in and some vital mistakes in the Sharks defence allowed Torfaen to score a converted touchdown and a penalty which brought the Full-Time score to Torfaen Tigers 34 West Wales Sharks 30.
So close yet so far...
